Introduction – Men and Women Disagree on Their Contributions to Housework
A recent article by Connor Ibbetson on YouGov delves into the disparities between men and women’s perceptions of their contributions to household chores. While progress has been made in terms of gender equality, studies indicate that women in the UK still shoulder a larger share of household responsibilities, averaging 20 hours per week compared to men’s 11.5 hours.
A YouGov survey of men and women in heterosexual relationships living together revealed a significant discrepancy in how both genders perceive their contributions to household tasks. In many areas, neither gender believes they and their partner contribute equally. For example, 45% of men believe cleaning is mostly or entirely done by their female partner. However, 66% of women claim they are primarily responsible for cleaning. This disparity suggests that some individuals might overestimate their contributions.
Other areas of contention include cooking, with 63% of women saying they handle most or all of the cooking, while only 48% of men agree with this assessment. Shopping also sees a divide, with 61% of women believing they handle most of the grocery shopping, but only 35% of men concurring.
Laundry is another task with differing perceptions. 77% of women claim they handle most or all of the laundry, while only 55% of men agree. Interestingly, when it comes to household finances, both genders believe they handle it predominantly, with 58% of men and 51% of women making this claim.
Childcare also sees a divide in perceptions. 59% of mothers believe they are primarily responsible for childcare, but only 30% of fathers agree. Most fathers (61%) believe childcare duties are split evenly, but only 38% of mothers concur.
